In their book The Spirit Level - Why Equality is Better for Everyone, Richard Wilkinson and Kate Pickett explore the idea on why more equal societies are the ones which do better in most of the parameters analyzed. Portugal's position in this equality-meter is very grim, being only surpassed by the USA, which is the world's most unequal country.
